Totally agree about your network not being as valuable as you might think. Just hit a year since job loss. In my 60’s. It’s been tough! Happy you got yours in less time!

Thank you for sharing! I just hit 6 months today and so many highs and lows. I went through various phases with interviews, and to your point on a long process- I went 8 meetings over 4-5 months made it to top 2 and didn’t get the offer. I was heartbroken. Hoping the right thing lands soon! I also agree nothing corporate is stable so thinking about my next step long term. Congrats on the new role! Exciting to move forward!

Thank you for writing this post! I am in the midst of a job search as well and I really appreciate this advice. For context, I am not in the fashion world at all but somehow LinkedIn pushed it to me so your reach is growing!

I have been surprised when some of my LinkedIn comments get 10x more views than my original posts.

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on your new job, staying resilient during the job search and this advice you’ve shared is so SPOT ON!!

Dina we never met, but I too spent time with Shiseido Group (before you joined I think) and when your Substack popped up as a recommendation due to my following many other Subtacks I thought “I recognise this name - but where from?” Hilariously LinkedIn had been recommending we connect, and I tend to avoid LinkedIn especially when it involves any connections with Shiseido employees (let’s just say I hated working there and too was laid off - but Shiseido is notorious for doing this regularly, and have now left the beauty industry entirely…..but ironically my role immediately after Shiseido Group was in hair care also).

So glad I found your Substack! I remember your blog back in the day when I worked at ICED Media. Congrats on the new role - and loving your podcast, listening to the episode with John Januzzi now.

Congratulations on the new job! Having been there recently myself, this is all great advice. I will say where I ended up was the job with the long process (not a lot of interviews but about one a month for 4 months). However it is a small private company and I have been very happy at it!

I’m so glad! Every situation is different but I’ve heard of people going through 10 rounds only to be rejected. It shouldn’t take 10 meetings to know a candidate is the right choice.

So true. Mine was all of four interviews but the recruiter had an exclusive with the company and was used to their slowness so that helped reassure me. It was actually about how busy they were with clients and work travel that slowed the process down.

I also used AI to help tailor my resume, cover letter, learn more about the companies and people, and help with interview questions.

Congratulations on the new position! Great advice. Interesting comment about networking. I think especially in a tough market most are less likely to go to bat for acquaintances unless they were trusted close colleagues?.

Love your advice Dina!!! Agree with it all. I’ve had a few clients really lean into AI use (strategically) for interview prep, even down to recording interviews and asking it to give feedback on how they did/could do better and honestly, it was such a game changer.

Congrats on your new role!
